Ayden's stay in the PICU can best be described as "stir crazy." The morning after surgery, Ayden was ready to get playing and out of the hospital. Well, as you can imagine, this is not what the doctors and nurses had in mind. So...the challenge was finding ways to keep Ayden busy. His bed became a mess of everything from pink play-doh, to markers, dinosaurs, trucks, and games. He traced his hand several times, and that poor play-doh will never be the same. Needless to say, when it came time for him to move to the surgical unit, he was excited.
The surgical unit rooms are larger and allows for more space, more visitors, and of course - trips to the playroom. No sooner was Ayden in his new room then he wanted to go to the playroom. While the nurses were getting him ready, he made sure to tell them, "These can't leave" when referring to his IV. We spent the greater part of the next 3 hours in the play room, while Ayden enjoyed some new found freedom; although, he was still attached to his oxygen and heart monitors. The only thing that could get Ayden back to his room was telling him that his brother and sister were on their way. However, he did not want Addison to come to see him, as he thought she would lie in his bed. In reality, Ayden just didn't want to share his one-on-one attention.
Unfortunately, Saige and Kelton's visit was short lived. They still loved checking in on their little brother, and enjoyed watching him open his presents from Jerry. In fact, Kelton immediately wanted to play with Ayden's new cars, but Ayden would have nothing of it. "I am in the hospital," he scolded Kelton. Obviously, not interested in sharing right then. However, he did assure Kelton he would share once he was out of the hospital. Saige and Kelton brought with them notes from all of Ayden's little playgroup friends...he wanted to hang them all on the wall.
Ayden did enjoy his visitors and was always disappointed when they had to leave. "I don't like it when my friends leave...it makes me sad." When it was time for Danny, Delana, Taylor and Jaiden to leave, Ayden said, "you're leaving me? I don't want you to leave” He then pulled Taylor into his bed in an effort to keep them there longer. He was similarly disappointed when Grandma Terri, Jerry, Uncle Jason and Aunt Emily had to leave. He had tell Emily and Jason his plans he had made on the way up to the hospital - about going to their house with everyone, but mom and dad.
