We arrived at the hospital at noon, and found out that Dr. Hawkins wanted to perform Ayden's surgery himself. Another surgeon had been assigned with Dr. Hawkins supervising, but due to Ayden's unique condition, Dr. Hawkins wanted to be more involved. There were no complaints from us with this news. He reitterated to us the reason they were doing this interim procedure rather than the Fontan, and even admitted that in his surgical notes from Ayden's last major surgery, that "I don't know how I'll perform a Fontan on him." However, he reassured us that with this procedure allowing Ayden more time to grow, a Fontan should be more of a reality in the future.
Ayden went into surgery around 1:15 and a little over an hour later he was done! We knew it would not be as long as his other surgeries, but it took us a bit by surprise to not be waiting for a long time. Ayden smiled at us when he first saw us in the PICU, and this was a great blessing for us...as in the past, he generally does not wake up for quite a while or is upset.
Ayden is doing well, but is exteremely thirsty and hungry. The poor little guy has not eaten since midnight last night, and can't even have clear liquids until 8:30pm. He is going to be so excited to have liquids and then food again. He will likely be moved out of the PICU and to the Surgical Unit by mid-day tomorrow, and may even be able to come home as early as tomorrow night. However, we are thinking Thursday morning may be the most realistic. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers on behalf of our little superstar.
